Easter Cookies

It's that time of year again when I bust out my Easter cookie cutters, strain my neck and back and stay up way too late while decorating sugar cookies!

I tried to avoid the last part this year, staying up late to decorate cookies, but was left with no other option after my 2 year old broke out into hysterics because I wouldn't let her eat all the cookies on the counter!  It was crazy!  She just didn't get it, and how could she, she's only 23 months old!  I did give her and her sister one at the beginning as a nice little treat and perhaps that was the problem.  She had tasted the sweetness and was not able to end there.  Kinda like me diving into a bag of chips.  Poor self control.  She kept pulling at my leg saying "icing, lick!", "cookies, me!!!!" "Pleeeeeaaaase, Mama!!!!"  So heart breaking!

Aside from that drama, they turned out well and taste delicious.  I tried a new recipe this year, one with icing sugar in the dough instead of white sugar.  I don't think I'll do it again.  They are super sweet!  With all the icing on top (full of icing sugar) it's just too much!  I never thought I would say that, but it's the truth.  I think I'll stick to my tried and true Canadian Living recipe.

Did you make Easter cookies this year?  What's your favourite recipe?

This little chick is my favourite!

New Clothes Pins in the Shop

As I was shopping for spring coloured paper to make my Easter bunny bunting, I couldn't resist buying some additional paper to make some decorated spring clothes pins for my shop.  Soft pastels are such pretty colours and they really make me think of spring.  Here's hoping for some nice spring weather now!

I love the yellow honeycomb paper!  It looks more Dijon yellow in the photo but it really is a soft yellow colour.  It makes me think of the bumblebees making their honey.  Such a wonderful thing!

I hope you are enjoying some nice spring weather wherever you may be!

Bunny Bunting

The title of this post alone makes me happy.  I hope it does the same for you.  I LOVE bunnies, all kinds, especially real ones! They couldn't be any cuter.  So sweet, soft and adorable.

So what better time of year to immerse yourself in bunny crafts than during Easter!

The girls and I had a fun weekend doing Easter crafts.  I worked on my bunny bunting while they made a variety of crafts and cards.

As you know, I love fabric.  My love of pattern and colour isn't just for fabric, though, it's for paper too!  I picked up some soft pastel coloured scrapbooking paper to make my bunting.  I've put together a simple tutorial so you can make one too!

Materials:
- patterned paper
bunny template
- pencil
scissors
- small white cotton balls
- glue (white or glue stick)
- ribbon

Once you've chosen your decorative paper, draw a simple bunny template and cut it out on thick card stock or bristol board.  Then trace your bunny template on the back of your selected papers and cut, cut, cut!

Using an exacto knife, or another sharp cutting tool, slice little slits in your bunnies ears.  Don't worry, it doesn't hurt them!  This is to feed the ribbon through to hang them.  Alternatively, you could use a hole punch.  I tried this out but it took too much of the pretty paper away which is why I resorted to the knife.

Now the cute part, glue on little white cotton balls for their tails!  I used basic white school glue.

When they have dried, thread a ribbon through the slits in their ears until all your bunnies are hanging from the ribbon.  I used a pretty pink lace ribbon.  I thought it would provide more friction so the bunnies wouldn't slide all over.  It worked well.

Hang, and admire!

Happy Spring Equinox!!!

My Online Business Made the Old Fashioned Paper!

Can you spot the only positive news item on the front page of www.thespec.com?
      ↑ That's me!
CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It is truly unbelievable to see my name on the front page.  I wish my name wasn't surrounded by so many sad articles, but nonetheless, it was a real pleasure to have this little feature.
This never would have happened without the connections and communication that twitter provides.  A friend tweeted my name to a writer at the spec and within a couple weeks there's a guy in my house taking my photo for an article.
I've already had many emails this morning from friends and family, and complete strangers, congratulating me on the article!  It's so neat!

It's wonderful to have the exposure for my little business, especially locally.  An online business doesn't give you nearly the same presence as a store front in your local town.  I've always been amazed how few local orders I get, and yet, how many international orders I get!

Amazing Race Canada Application Video: Extended Version

Sam and I fell to the pressures of uploading our Amazing Race Canada Audition Video to YouTube.  Of course, Sam couldn't do it without a few edits.  The video now ends with a dunk session, featuring him, at our apartment in Surfer's Paradise, Australia.

Ahhh, what a life we lived!

The Pirates are Here!

Pirates have plundered Pepper Picnic!

Ahoy thar matey, I have some great news for you, you can now find pirate snack bags and sandwich bags in my Etsy Shop!

There are lots of options for you...

Here's a fun set with a black skull and bones snack bag and a blue pirate sandwich bag.
The blue snack bag on it's own with cool pirates all over it, along with seagulls, treasure, cannons, octopi, maps and much more!
Here's a set with the matching blue pirate snack and sandwich bag.

And lastly, a black snack bag with scary skulls and crossbones all over it!  At least in this case the Jolly Roger has some jaunty colours.  This is truly a new level for Pepper Picnic.  I'm not sure that I could categorize this bag in my usual genre of "cute" and "sweet."  Nonetheless, I hope it makes some little pirate wannabes happy.  It sure made my husband happy.

I think these snack bags would make the perfect party favor or loot bag for a pirate themed birthday party, which there seems to be no shortage of these days!  You could fill them with so many fun treasures - chocolate gold coins, beaded necklaces, a little map, pirate stickers or an eye patch!  I may have to coax one of my children (and withhold my husband) into having a pirate party soon!

New in the Shop: Cupcakes and Owls

I've added a new snack bag and a new pencil case in my Etsy shop.  For all the owl lovers out there, here's a new owl print pencil case lined with a coordinating aqua cotton.

I just bought some new cupcake fabric to replace my previous cupcake snack bag. Kids love this fabric!  If a child is asked to choose a snack bag from my shop, they most often choose the cupcakes.  The few times I've had a table at a craft sale the kids usually picked the cupcake fabric, even the boys!  Who can resist the sweetness of cupcakes?  Interesting little research study for you there!
