Superhero Cape

It was my friend`s son`s 5th birthday yesterday so I spent the hour before leaving for their house frantically sewing my gift together for him.  It was my first attempt at making a cape.  I knew I needed to make him something “cool” because the Christmas gift I sewed him is no longer in use since his classmate told him it was “baby” fabric.  Can you believe it?  He’s five and already falling to the pressures of his peers!  Makes me so sad.

So, I decided to customize a Superman style cape for him with his initial inside the Superman emblem.  He LOVES superheroes and dressing up like them so I thought it would be perfect.  Thankfully, the gift was a big hit.  We`ll see how long it last before it, too, is for “babies!”

I made the cape with a polyester satin and let me tell you, that fabric is not easy to work with.  It does however, make for perfect billowing as a young superhero in training runs full speed through the house.  To get the full effect of a flowing cape you really do need to use something light like satin.

My daughter was pretty excited to try it out.  Now I need to make her one too!
